LONG POND STUDIO

Aaron Dessner's Recording Studio

Long Pond Studio’s incarnation began with Aaron Dessner having a great wish to move out of New York City with his family and create a musical oasis for himself and for his band, The National.

Recording Studio Design

From the beginning, the project had some very specific demands, desires, and requirements. Our main goal was to create a space which would encourage and inspire creativity for the creation of music, not just a place to capture it.  With that as the fundamental template, together we created an exacting combination of performance control and spatial cohesion.  Collaborating with acoustical engineer Jeff Hedback of HdAcoustics on the practical sound quality and its necessary architectural merger, we created a high level space for creating, recording and mixing. Using the already existing old pole barn equipment shed on the land, we reused and repurposed the materials to our needs. The connection with the surrounding natural landscape and bio-diversity of the nearby pond ecosystem were at the fore of our design process.

Project Achievements & Legacy

Our work culminated with The National creating and recording their Grammy award-winning album 'Sleep Well Beast’ in the space and using Long Pond Studio on the album cover- the image becoming the focal point of Pentagram’s marketing campaign.

In the years since Long Pond was built, Aaron Dessner has more than utilized this studio, his creative space, becoming a top producer and recording the work of Taylor Swift (Folklore, Evermore), Big Red Machine, Gracie Abrams, Girl in Red, Ed Sheeran, and many others. What began as an old shed by a pond is now a hub for today’s top recording artists, its vision expanding with each session, song, and riff.
